I caught my chicken’s killer coming back for more. He killed 4 of my chickens Saturday night in my chicken coop.
Don’t worry here in Canada we don’t believe in the death sentence, so I brought him for a little ride and let him free.

That’s great. Wild animals will always be wild and doing what they need to to survive.

It's cute. I know someone who had to kill some particularly vicious raccoons that were killing their chickens. They relocated a few but a couple were so aggressive they tried attacking through the live traps.

would’ve been better if it was a cat

We have lynx, bobcats, hawks, owls, and alligators eating our chicken They are too big for a trap :(

My gf’s dad used to catch chipmunks in his yard with a similar live trap, and drive them to the local park.

The red fox is so charming from a distance. Sorry about your chickens!

What does the fox say?

Yay for relocation over killing!

Not a chicken related problem, but we’ve had a family of rabid groundhogs at work for a while now. My boss shot about half of them, and the rest seem to have turned up dead of natural causes.
But, now we have to worry about rabies being introduced to the property - not even fully open yet, and we may have diseased animals.

Relocation probably won’t work. Foxes are pretty smart and will often find their way back to their home territory. Even if it doesn’t, another will move in. Don’t believe me. Listen to folks who care a lot more about foxes than I do :
Foxes being very intelligent creatures will usually just find their way back if transferred to a different location. In the UK this is illegal since it is cruel and it must be said ineffective. Removing a territorial animal away from its territory will only attract another fox in. The safest way of guarding your chickens would be electric fencing.

just shoot it.

I don’t think it will change much either but it was worth a chance to try. I have 2 neighbours in back who also have chickens.

Perhaps being trapped will scare the fox enough to keep it away from your chickens. I’d still invest in some electric fence. I had to use it inside the yard to keep one of my old roommate’s dogs from digging out. Good stuff. Works great.

Dude I brought him deeper in the woods further from residential areas, cause if I didn’t others will shoot him/her. I tried giving it a chance. What did you want me to do, let him stay around and get shot? I did what I had to do to give my chickens a chance to survive.

Why you hate cats?
There are a few cats around and they never tried to hunt my chickens. Dogs on the other hand will do the same as the fox, except only for fun and not to eat them.

I will have to look into electric fence option.

Haha, damn internet not conveying emotions.
I was meaning that’s great of you. Live & let live. The fox is only doing what he needs to survive, but you also have protect your livestock.
Most around here would just shoot it and that legal since its been eating your chickens. But giving it another chance to go do what he does, somewhere else is commendable.
If he does come back, more drastic measures may need to be taken, but for now, today was a good day in the life of the fox.

I don’t hate cats! I just thought it would be funnier to see a cat eating your chicken. They’ll gladly eat your chicken or turkey if you look away from your plate for 5 seconds, so maybe they like wild chickens, too.

Sorry, was not the vibe I got.
Truth be told, I told my wife i’m gonna catch that fucker and kill it.( the day it happened) but that’s not me. And I couldn’t really kill a fox for being a fox. That’s the reason I bought the cages. I could of just bought a box of bullets, would of been cheaper, but not me. So when it happened I got my big trap and a handful of cat food. I caught him 6 days later. I took a drive about 15-20 Kms in the woods and opened the door and he took off. I took my 2014 pathfinder off road(gravel roads) for the first time.
Once again sorry I was getting a totally different vibe.

I think cats won’t attack chickens well not adult chickens. Chickens are bigger than them, and in greater numbers. We have a black cat that lurks around and looks at them, hangs around with them. Maybe if only one chicken the outcome would be different.
I was also checking the trap 3-4 times a day to make sure I didn't trap a cat or a dog.
